Europe gives the green light to the use of fly larvae for animal feed

The recent approval of the new European Union Regulation that authorizes the use of processed animal proteins derived from insects in the feeding of poultry and pigs represents a revolution for the sector, according to Diego Amores, CEO of Entomo Agroindustrial, a benchmark in Spain in the larval rearing of the black soldier fly, used for this purpose.

A European Regulation kicks off two of the most important feed markets that account for 65% of production in the EU

Another legislative change is pending that allows the use of raw materials of animal origin to feed insects

Currently, the use of insects as bioconverters allows the valorization of organic matter in high-quality products, such as proteins for animal and human food, fats (for use in detergents, industrial oils or the cosmetic industry), chitin and chitosan (for activities that ranging from water purification to the pharmaceutical industry) or substrates for the fertilization of crops. In chitosan alone, current consumption in Europe is about 6,000 tons, but it is expected that in 2024 it will exceed 12,000 tons.

In the field of animal nutrition, the protein obtained from the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), which is produced by the Spanish company Entomo Agroindustrial, is used for nutritional purposes and functional food in some animals, until now essentially for feed of aquaculture, whose production in Spain grew by 2.9% in 2019, reaching 180,562 tons.

For Diego Amores, CEO of Entomo Agroindustrial, a company specialized in Spain in the rearing of these larvae as protein for animal feed and in the application of this technology for the treatment of organic bio-waste, “the approval of the use of insects in pig feed and birds represents a great challenge for the sector. We have to be able to scale production progressively over the next few years to be competitive in quantity and quality of the final product ”. The Regulation also represents a starting signal for two of the most important feed markets in Europe, which account for 65% of production in the EU.

The European Union is the world’s second largest producer of pork after China and the largest exporter of pork and pork products. The main producing countries of the EU are Germany, Spain and France, and between them they represent half of the total production of the EU. It is also one of the world’s largest producers of poultry meat and a net exporter of poultry products, with an annual production of around 13.4 million tonnes.
